The following are our class “Voice for Life” winners chosen by Dr. Hall and other teachers. First place winners are being sent to the diocese for competition. ALL of the kids did great work!!

Wow! What a week!!!
4th Grade S.S-finished learning about the geography of Missouri and began learning about the impact of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery on the state of Missouri. Additionally they learned about important individuals in the Civil Rights Movement. Reading-learned about inferencing. We had some really wonderful class discussions on the novel we are reading; “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane”. The kids completed a variety of comprehension activities over chapters 1-4. It made me SO happy that the kids begged to be able to read another chapter. Homework-went home today. Due next Friday. Kids have regular spelling words and some vocabulary words which they need to know the definition of, but NOT how to spell. 5th Grade S.S-Learned about the Missouri Compromise. Doing a combined reading/s.s unit on “The Captain’s Dog” and Lewis and Clark. In addition to book discussions and comprehension activities, the kids are creating a project for “Thomas Jefferson” in which they have chosen what Corps of Discovery member they are during the journey. The students are providing Thomas Jefferson with information about their particular corp member, the flora and fauna, difficulties encountered and their progression towards the Pacific Ocean. Homework-went home today. Due next Friday. There are regular spelling words and vocabulary words that the kids need to know the definition for, but NOT how to spell. 5 points extra credit in any subject that I teach (will put towards lowest grade ) for any student who attends any church service or mass IN UNIFORM this Sunday and provides me with a picture or parent note indicating that they were in uniform at church. Students not able to attend church may write 1 paragraph about why Catholic Education is important to them. Make sure to read all the school newsletters and notes about Catholic Schools Week. On Sunday your child can sing with the adult choir. This week:
-Finish Lewis and Clark map, continue Manifest Destiny -Begin the book "The Captain's Dog" -the journey of Lewis and Clark told by the perspective of the dog. The students will be reading, engaging in discussion and completing many assignments over this book in the next several weeks. -Kids will be learning about types of poetry this week and choosing a type to use in order to write their "Voice for Life" submission on St . Peter Claver -Finish St. Peter Claver posters -Religion-how do Martin Luther King Jr. and St. Peter Claver embody the Catholic beliefs of Social Justice and performing Corporal Works of Mercy? How can students follow their example? Over the next couple of weeks we will be exploring and learning about the different areas of Catholic Social Justice and Corporal Works of Mercy. There will be many guest speakers....some who have shown social justice and mercy and some who have benefited from social justice and mercy. Tomorrow, students will hear the story of Nadine Nzabo and her courageous journey of being forced to leave her school in the Congo and brought to Uganda as a refugee, never to see her family again. No spelling packet this week. There IS spelling homework. Kids are responsible for knowing the correct spelling of the word and the definition of the word. Definitions will be provided on the test. The kids will match the word to the correct definition. -Quiz today on Missouri geography
This week- - The Civil Rights Movement/Act, MLK-learning and timeline -Natural resources of Missouri, Industry in Missouri -Begin reading the book "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane". We will be reading this amazing book for several weeks and the kids will be engaged in many discussions around the book and completing many assignments about the book. -No spelling packet this week. There IS spelling homework. Kids are responsible for knowing the correct spelling of the word and the definition of the word. Definitions will be provided on the test. The kids will match the word to the correct definition. - Sorry about the confusion. The map paper sent home, yesterday is ONLY a study guide. Nothing needs to be turned back in. The kids are to know the location of: Kansas City, St. Louis, Jefferson City and Springfield. They need to be able to locate the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, and know the 4 regions of Missouri. All words will be provided on the test.
We will be reviewing the sacrament of Baptism this week and discussing the Baptism of Jesus. PLEASE send in a Baptism picture or send me one ASAP. Thank you!!! There will be a religion quiz on Baptism on Friday.
Dear Families, It’s been a great first week back! We finished the book “Mr Popper’s Penguins” today in 4th grade and the students began a book report project on the book. The students also really enjoyed learning about the geography of Missouri and they all did EXCELLENT on the quiz about Missouri’s border states and map coordinates. This week: Quiz on Friday over Missouri geography-start of Missouri river into the state of Missouri ( near Kansas City) where the Missouri River leaves the state of Missouri (near St. Louis). Location of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, Kansas City, St. Louis, Jefferson City and Springfield. Also the Glaciated Till Plain, Ozark Highlands, Osage Plains, Mississippi Lowlands and Alluvial River Plain. (There WILL BE a word bank for kids) In 5th grade, the students really absorbed the information about the Louisiana Purchase and we had some great class discussions. In writing, the 5th graders began writing their first article (about the Louisiana Purchase) for the newspaper they will create with many articles to come, about Westward Expansion. This week: Quiz on Lewis and Clark and the Corp of Discovery (all info covered in class) on Friday. Spelling packets due Friday. I will be out Monday and Tuesday as I have a prior contract with the Hurley School District to do reading testing 3 times a year. Many Blessings!
